Where the Light found Me.
Photograph by John Casey
My journey to the Dolomites began two years earlier, when a chance discovery of these extraordinary mountains inspired me to return to Italy with my camera.
I called the photographic journey Chasing the Light, believing that the most memorable photographs are not simply about spectacular places, but about recognizing those fleeting moments when light transforms a landscape.
Standing high above Val Gardena at Seceda, I saw the opportunity immediately.
A sea of clouds filled the valley beneath the jagged Odle peaks. The mountains rose dramatically from the mist, their dark limestone faces contrasting with a narrow ribbon of sunlight illuminating the grassy ridgeline.
There was no elaborate setup or carefully staged composition. Just the instinctive recognition that everything had come together — the clouds, the mountains, the shadows and, most importantly, the light. I captured the moment before it could change.
That photograph became one of the defining images of my Chasing the Light journey. It reminded me that photography is as much about learning to see as it is about knowing how to use a camera.
