Wide Field in Orion
Photograph by MICHAEL SWEETMAN
As a child, I was fascinated by space. I still remember visiting the Hayden Planetarium and gazing at beautiful photographs of the structures scattered across the cosmos. One image that stayed with me was the Horsehead Nebula, an iconic cloud of gas and dust silhouetted against the glow of the Orion region.
Now years later, I reconnected with that sense of wonder through astrophotography. Instead of simply admiring images of deep space, I began creating my own. I was able to photograph the Horsehead Nebula myself, the very subject that had captured my imagination so many years before.
My dream was to have a museum-quality print of one of my own images hanging on my own wall. This photograph represents the fulfillment of that dream: a childhood fascination transformed into a passion, brought home through my own lens.
