_Elementary_
Photograph by Steven Shires
I was on an assignment in an elementary school in Fort Lauderdale. There was an event in the cafeteria/auditorium. The condensation on the windows and already been "marred" by a students hand. There was also a hand print (not seen) on the window that I had already captured. I turned and looked back….and students had begun filing in. I saw this boy coming, and I rapid fired and luckily captured him just as he crossed in the hand swiped position. I knew I had a great shot. I was excited when I got it home to see. I ordered a 16x20 non-professional grade image that I would be able to see how it held up. I ordered 2 copies from my printer on watercolor paper. Framed it and placed it directly in a city wide contest.. As I was standing beside it at one point of the evening so was the man that had assigned me to this location. He did not know that's where it came from, until after he said, "I'm buying it right now". And he did. He's a major collector, and wanted to know if he'd get a discount - I said no! LOL. I was an elementary school teacher for 11 years - of kids of this age. It was hugely gratifying that I was able to combine my two careers in one single image. Oh, and it took 3rd place…..
