Give and Take

Photograph by Andrés Gómez Salazar

There is always a story behind an image. The story behind this image is that we made a trip to Africa that we planed for months. We decided the places we would visit, the things we would do, the people that we would meet, the places we would stay at.... But we did not know what we would see being there. One day that turned out to be a rainy day and we had a hot air ballon ride: the first of two that we planed to do. That had been the high of our day despite the weather that was not great. On our way back to our camp near Serengeti we had to take a different road and right as we did that we had a group of Zebras on one side of the road. We stoped and there was a couple of young Zebras in a very active interaction that went back and forward from playful to aggressive. We stayed there for at least 20 minutes but to me it was all the time about this two and the others were just around them (15 or 20 more). I think I shot more than 50 frames many of which I love. But this shot, in which they are both fighting and biting each other's legs is the one I really love the most. When we went back home I wanted to print one shot that I would see every day of that trip, I wanted it to be B&W and be big enough to go by its own over my 5 places sofa in our living room. It's been 4 years since then and it's still there. That very moment I never planed to see.
